01.06.09 Iron Mountain Preparing To Serve Mac Users By Doug Caverly Watch enough TV, and you'll get the idea that Apple fans are everywhere; commercials for iPods, iPhones, and computers seem to come on during every break. So Iron Mountain has made what looks like an intelligent move and decided to offer this growing crowd an online backup solution. The (perhaps-not-creatively-named) Connected Backup solution with Mac support should become available in March, and according to a formal release, "provides the same award-winning features as Connected Backup for PC, including fast, automatic backup without user interruption or IT intervention; an end to data loss from viruses, misplaced or stolen laptops, data corruption and user error; and finally, the solution gives IT control of secure backup and restoration both inside and beyond company firewalls."
All in all, "The solution's patented data reduction technologies reduce storage needs by up to 85 percent." Since underserved people have the potential to become fanatical customers, this could become a real moneymaker for Iron Mountain. It may even lead to a sort of symbiotic Iron Mountain-Apple relationship, causing businesses to see one less problem with embracing things other than PCs. Iron Mountain is entering the Mac backup and storage market behind EMC, though, so it can't be guaranteed clear sailing and complete success. About the Author: Doug is a staff writer for WebProNews.
