Enterprise Storage Shopping Considerations

By Doug Caverly

When consumers compare shopping strategies, one can often learn something from the other (the idea of researching cars' turning diameters, for example). And of course companies that would otherwise have to spend money on consumer research can also pick up important details. So enterprise storage experts of all sorts may appreciate a new explanation of one buyer's thought process.

Chris Mellor recently interviewed "Mike," who's "a senior storage strategy guy in a European enterprise, a Fortune 500-type company, with more than 10PB of storage capacity." It stands to reason, then, that Mike's a pretty knowledgeable guy.

As for his take on enterprise storage, Mike's of the opinion that his current approach (which involves "EMC block storage and NetApp file storage-dominated estate") works well enough, and he'd rather not risk a change to save just a little money.

Any technical advantages offered by an alternative solution would have to be significant, too, and Mike would appreciate some sort of warranty in the event that things go wrong.

Then, with regards to Mike's views about a handful of specific companies, Mellor wrote, "Pillar doesn't offer enough advantages over CLARiiON . . . . HP isn't selling to him . . . . 3PAR comes close to crossing the chasm into selling to enterprises like his - but hasn't made it yet . . . . Compellent is not even on his radar screen."

Let's hope everyone can use this information to their advantage.
