Hitachi Unveils New Mac-exclusive Storage Solutions

With CES 2012 looming on the horizon, Hitachi has gotten a little eager and started spilling the beans on some of cool new products.

First off, Hitachi announced two new powerful new internal drives to their lineup: the Travelstar 5K1000 (2.5in, 1TB, 5400rpm) and the Deskstar 7K4000 (3.5in, 4TB, 7200rpm). I will say this again before I go further: these are Mac-only drives, so don't get all excited if you can't use them. Both of the drives will be going inside the G-Technology line of external drives, which is fantastic news for those of you who need lots of fast, reliable storage.

The Travelstar will be going inside the two new G-Drive mobile products, which are very stylish and portable (must haves for the majority of Mac users). These products have two Firewire 800 ports and a single USB 2.0 port on the back of the unit, and surprisingly enough, the units don't require an external power source, as they are bus powered. There is also a USB specific model if you know that you'll never use the Firewire.

The Deskstar is going in the big brothers of the mobile units, The G-Drive and the G-Raid. Each of these monsters has two Firewire 800 ports, a single USB 2.0 port, an eSATA port, and are definitely not bus powered. They are build specifically with Audio/Video editing in mind, so Hitachi built them to be as fast and powerful as possible, while still being fairly affordable, with the 1TB G-Drive running you about $200 (the 8TB G-Raid is $900, by the way).

The release of these drives is going to be right around the corner, along with about a million and one other amazing products from various companies. I'm going to be watching as much of CES (Jan 10-13) as can be shown on television, and if you are a hardware geek like me, I would suggest you do the same.
